What I Did and What I'm Going To Do

Well, last night I ended up not playing with my polymer clay.  But I did spend a few hours playing with wire.  I made my first ever attempt at wire wrapping a river rock for a pendent.  Not too bad for not having the skill-set to do this:

I also attempted to make a clasp.... nnnnnnnnot so well done:

The catch is okay, but I'm not overly impressed with the hook.  Oh, well, I'll just have to practice on cheap artist wire. It'll come. It'll come.

Now, as to what I'm going to do.... I have received such positive response to the idea of a Sci-Fi blog hop that I'm going to go ahead and host one.  Now, before you all start doing the Happy Hamster Dance, realize it probably won't be until January or February because a) I don't want to interfere with the Holidays, I know most of you have craft/trade shows you're in around this time or you're really cranking out the product for your on-line stores; b) I don't want to interfere with Lori Anderson's Bead Soup Blog Party which, I believe, is going to be in January and I know a number of you/us want to join.  Once I get that date from Lori (or at least an approximate) I will post our Hop date as well as the rules.

I will say this, several have already asked about science fiction versus science fantasy (i.e. The Matrix vs. The Lord of the Rings) and my thought is that "Sci-Fi" covers a large spectrum.  HOWEVER, someone else also suggested a "series" of sci-fi hops where we can cover more than one universe/genre over a period of time.  Give me your thoughts on this: one hop that allows for sci-fi/fantasy or a series of hops that covers several genres over time.  What do you think?

  1. I think one blog hop with wide criteria would be good. Because otherwise what if our favourite universe/author doesn't fit the criteria? For example E Nesbit wrote a lot of amazing fantasy books for kids, only they pre-dated the sword'n'sorcery cliches that came in with LotR - for example The Enchanted Castle was one of my favourites. But I guess if I had to wait for a specific E Nesbit themed blog hop I might be waiting a long time!!

    1. You know, that is such a good point. Someone else was worried if I gave too much leeway she'd freeze with too many choices. Perhaps I can make it whichever author/show/movie/series you want unless you want me to choose one for you. Or, make it whichever author/show/movie/series you want but here's a list of authors/shows/movies/series if you get stuck and limit THAT list if someone needs help. Thanks, Sarah S, that's great. And, please, do join in the hop!

  2. I agree with Sarah's comment. There is likely to be more interest across a wider audience if your guidelines are not specific to one point on the genre spectrum. Yes, I realize non-aficionados may lump SF/F writings, but I see it as a sort of sliding scale with the pure SF and pure Fantasy at either end, and many intriguing blends at points between. There is even great variability within the writings of a single author or even series.

  3. Oh my goodness, of course there should be more than one! I read a lot and get caugght up in whatever I'm reading at the time, but I could go back to old favorites and get inspired again and again. There are too many choices but if we knew we could work on another hop in the future, well, we might not feel so pressured to choose Just ONE for all time. Perhaps you should ask that the first one be inspiration for what you are currently reading or have just read, then a later one for a review of past favorites. The possibilities here are unlimited and that is the problem.

  4. Arghhh, I meant to also comment on your wire work. Wire is what I started with when I began making jewelry and I sometimes still struggle with clasps and hooks. SIGH. The one you worked on is not one of my favorite hooks, too easy to screw up the coils and make it look clumsy. I found some great hooks, and easier ones in this book: Handcrafted Wire Findings by Denise Peck and Jane Dickerson. It also has some interesting links to make too.

    1. Thanks for the 411 on the book. I will definitely go look it up!
