A FEW MORE PICS

Well, I have a few more pics of jewelry.  I didn't get as much done this weekend as I wanted because my Mom, Saner Sister and I were doing a serious house cleaning because we have guests coming in starting this Thursday for the Thanksgiving holiday.  Not that I won't be glad to see them, but I really hate cleaning house like that. WORE. ME. OUT!!  Anyway, here's a few pics: (and, the watch can be made smaller by removing a few beads, I just need to be made aware)

Alaskan Aurora ~ a golden-tan crystal
bicon wire wrapped with tinier green

Spina Bifida - purple/yellow watch

MARSHA NEAL'S DESTASH SALE

Wow, I am just a postin' momma today!  Well, the reason for this one is because I made the mistake of visiting Marsha Neals' Etsy shop, Marsha Neal Studio, and bought these three pendents.  Aren't they great?  Yes, they're yellow. I'm planning to use them in my Spina Bifida line.  Yellow being the color of Hope for Spina Bifida and, in the first two pendants, the design puts me in mind of the spine and nerves that those born with SB have to deal with. (go to the Mayo Clinic to learn more about SB)

The 3rd pendant, the flower, is about hope; hope for the children, hope for their future, hope that all parents who deal with SB as their children grow struggle to keep alive because those kids do things at a different rate and level than "other kids" and because they want their kids to know it's about THEM, not about the SB they live with.  The first one I make will be going to my personal SB Momma who has taught me about living with this handicap. Being a mother to an as-active-as-possible little boy with SB and her hopes, fears, worries and tears in spite the knowledge that God is still in charge of all things.  She doesn't know it, of course, it's a surprise (unless she reads this) but the other two will be for sale as soon as I get them made and MY Etsy store up and running.  Thanks, Marsha, for having your Destash Sale!

VETERAN'S DAY ~ EVERY DAY

I'm blatantly stealing this from my other blog ~ Minstrals & Troubadors ~ and posting it here. I really can't think of anything better to say on this day of gratitude and rememberance of our brave Warriors.

It bothers me.

I bothers me that, when I thank a Veteran, he is surprised.  Or that he cries.  Not because I thanked him, but because anyone thanked him.
He didn't join the military to gain honors or acclaim.  Most of them joined out of a sense of duty, a desire to do what they considered the right thing and the choice to do whatever they could to contribute to the continuing freedom of what they considered a great nation.

When I see a Veteran, I shake his hand, tell him how much I appreciate his service and even ask what branch he was in or where he served.  They don't tell me much (it's mostly in passing, after all) but they proudly proclaim their branch of the military and unit they served in.
Most of the time, they smile in gratitude for my gratitude.  Once in awhile, tears will fill their eyes that someone my age will make the effort to even show gratitude for what they did with something as simple as a handshake, a smile, and a quiet "thank you".   Sometimes, if family is nearby, tears will fill their eyes, too.  Because someone was grateful to an unsung hero.
They don't want a parade.
They don't desire fame.
They don't need ceremonies.

They deserve respect for sacrifices made.
They deserve honor for services rendered.
They deserve a long line of grateful people shaking their hand and saying a quiet "thank you" until it's no longer a surprise.

If you see a Veteran (they ususally wear a baseball hat or a windbreaker or something else with the name of their unit or ship, something will give them away) stop and shake his hand.  Ask him where he served, what unit he was with, and thank him for that service.  If you can, pay for his meal. You can do this anonymously, I have, and what's a few dollars more for someone who offered his life for yours?  Just ask the waitress for his ticket and tell her to only let him know it's from a grateful citizen.  He'll be thrilled and it will make your day to have given a little gratitude to such a quiet, brave man.
They all went to hell and back for us.

Appreciate them while we still have them.

Thank them while we still have the time.

THE PRICE PAID
In Old Glory's depths I see
The lives all spent on me and thee.
Bravest men, beloved sons,
     Immortalized.... Forgotten ones.

Those Warriors of forgotten days,
     Men of deepest mem'ries haze,
Once fought for us across the sea
To keep their love'd country free.

Some say they went because they must,
     Some say because of wander-lust.
But, most of all, the Warrior went
To save us from tyrannic bent.

The colors that Old Glory shows,
Vibrant hues with which it glows,
Blue and white, they stand to me
     As Freedom's own, sweet purity.

The color, tho', that shines most bright,
And wraps itself around the sight,
Stands for the bloody price they paid.
Their lives, for Freedom, gladly trade.

if anyone knows the photographer,
please tell me so I can give him/her credit

 Where Are The Tears?
Where are the tears for the fallen in war?
For those who have journeyed thru Death's darkened door?

Where the reminders of valor? Unsung.
For those who departed with life left undone?

Where do you stand for the red, white and blue?
The banner defended by others who knew;

Knew they could die for taking a stand,
Knew they'd be hated, protecting this land,
Knew that their choice could be met with disgust
But knew, to save others, the choice was a must.

Where are the tears? Where is the pride?
Where is the faith to stand at their side?

Where is the gratitude, down thru the years,
For lives that were sacrificed. Where are the tears?

THOUGHTS, SUGGESTIONS, IDEAS

I'm one of those who can get three or four ideas (or more...my high school principle called me a schizophrenic thinker ~HA~) running through her head at one time and, upon occasion, actually pin them down and make them work (or, pen them down if it's a writing idea ~ I just love puns!).  It might take awhile, but it can be done.

Sometimes, however, an idea ferments and foams and boils and..... fades away.  This one hasn't faded, yet, but I'm not sure where to take it, so I'm asking for suggestions.  Here it is;  I was in London (yes, as in England) a number of years ago and we went to a street faire where they had all sorts of interesting things for sale (think of it as the British version of a flea market, I guess).  What caught my eye (and wallet) was an old fashioned key-hole cover.  It's brass, about four inches long and about 3 inches wide and it's carved... or embossed... or stamped.... I'm not sure, and I'm not sure exactly how old it is.  But it looks very old... Gorgeous, isn't it!

I want to use it, somehow, in my beading or art, but I'm thinking it's too heavy and bulky for a necklace.  I could use it to make a mold but we're still talking size, here.  I suppose I could make the mold then just use part of it, but that doesn't appeal to me at this time.  I've even thought about scanning it, reducing it and seeing if I could (somehow) make a mold from it that way.   So, even though I'm in the midst of finishing my November ABS challenge, and getting things together for the Virtual Craft Show, I thought I'd throw this out there and see what you folks have to say.  SOMEthing has to click!  I've just GOT to find a way to use this puppy!

WORK PROGRESSES FOR THE VIRTUAL CRAFT SHOW...

Well, I wasn't kidding about putting the necklace aside for a day but I knew I needed to create and the easiest things for me to make are earrings.  So I spent a few hours last night making earrings for the Virtual Craft Show as well as one pair to match the necklace.  I will say that I decided to keep the earrings to go with the necklace simple because I didn't want it fighting with the necklace.  The silver-wire earrings with the round yellow beads are going to be part of my Spina Bifida line.  Enjoy!
OH! OH! AND! I'm so excited to be able to say that, for the first two earrings, I MADE THE EAR WIRES MYSELF! WOOT! WOOT!  AND LINKS! I MADE LINKS (for the necklace, not the earrings) DOUBLE WOOTIDY WOOT! Yes, I am branching out (and getting braver) in my creativity! Thank you, Lori, for that chance by having the Virtual Craft Show!

THE CHALLENGE EVOLVES... SLOWLY

You all know I decided to participate in the Art Bead Scene's November Challenge and that this is the color pallet they gave us to work with:
I love these colors! I'm pretty sure I mentioned that in my last blog.  I love them because I love Autumn.
I hate these colors! I hate them because I can't use silver wire in my design.  Okay, I did say I was participating to stretch my mind and my creativity so I guess I can't really say I hate them.  It is making me think outside my little silver-encrusted box!

colors to match pallet
Well, I've gotten a good start (finally!) on my necklace.  Yes, yes, I was going to do a lanyard.  I changed my mind.  I'm a woman.  I get to do that.  I still plan to make a lanyard and a chain for holding your glasses in these colors, but that will come later.  Right now, it's turned into a necklace.  Here's the start (no, it's not finished, yet):

1) Pull out every bead that even remotely looks like it might match the colors in the pallet.
2) Sort through the colors (drooling over the lush richness of them) and spend at least 3 days trying to decide which ones will work best (never an easy job!)
3) Narrow down the choices

narrowed down colors
 4) Then narrow down the choices again
5) Create your first incarnation of the necklace, bracelet, lanyard, earrings (whatever flips your wig)
6) Create a second incarnation with a very slight difference
7) Take pictures to email to a beady friend to critique and sit and mull it over for a day (or two... but not much more)

.... now what?  (eeeeevil grin) Guess you'll have to come back to see...

CHALLENGE. ACCEPTED!

OOoohhhh!  I am either OUT of my MIND!  Or getting brave.  I haven't decided which, yet.  On top of the Virtual Craft Show I'm taking part in (see ad to right) I've decided to be part of a design challenge for the Art Bead Scene November Challenge.  I actually have some beads the colors of this months' challenge and thought I'd be brave.  Now... to come up with a design.
Necklace?
Bracelet?
Earrings?
Then, a friend of mine asked if I had thought of making and selling lanyards for those who have to have a company ID badge on/with them at all times.  I actually had and was planning to make that one of the things I sell in my Etsy shop (not that she was aware of this! HA!).  So, I decided that I would attempt my design around a lanyard!  I can make more than one item, it appears, so the first will be a lanyard.  If that makes me happy, then maybe some glasses holders or earrings.  I love these colors for the challenge, but, then, I love Autumn and her many colors as well.  So, as soon as the design is complete and put together, I will be sure to post the pics... well, I have to.  That's part of the rules to enter the contest.

I may not survive this, but at least I've gotten out of my comfort zone and tried something new!  We all should.  Otherwise our minds atrophy.
